Seattle’s Chancellor signs

Kam Chancellor was optimistic he would have a new contract before the start of the regular season.

A day after saying as much, the Seattle Seahawks’ starting strong safety signed a threeyear extension that will keep him with the only club for which he has played through the 2020 season. Chancellor’s new deal is worth up to $36 million, $25 million guaranteed.

Chancellor, 29, has been Seattle’s starting strong safety since 2011 and one of its lockerroom leaders. He spoke Monday about his optimism that a deal would get done before the start of the season but said he was willing to play out the final year of his deal. Injury updates: Rams defensive tackle Dominique Easley was carted off the field after suffering what is likely a serious knee injury in practice, according to NFL.com . ... The league website also reported that Baltimore rookie offensive lineman Nico Siragusa will miss the season after tearing three knee ligaments . ... Carolina quarterbac­k Cam Newton was held out of passing drills with soreness in his surgically repaired right throwing shoulder . ... Baltimore tight end Crockett Gillmore probably will miss the 2017 season after undergoing knee surgery.

Briefly: The Giants signed Mike Nugent to challenge rookie Aldrick Rosas for their placekicki­ng job. Nugent, 35, spent the past seven seasons with the Bengals before being released Dec. 13 . ... Ryan Clady, the Broncos’ tackle whose nineyear NFL career was checkered with injuries, is retiring.
