Some shifting on line to cover for holdout

- By Vic Tafur Vic Tafur is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

Neither head coach Jack Del Rio nor offensive line coach Mike Tice would ever say this, but tackle Donald Penn’s holdout through five days is not that big a deal.

In all honesty, the 34-yearold would get two or three days off the first two weeks of camp if he were in camp, and the left tackle showed in offseason workouts that he is in very good shape.

Del Rio said again Tuesday that he would talk only about players in Napa, and Tice would acknowledge only that there has been a domino effect the first four practices.

“It obviously has caused us some depth problems, as far as the rotation, and we have a couple of guys taking more work than they should take,” Tice said. The Raiders shifted Marshall Newhouse to Penn’s spot, and backup tackle/guard

Vadal Alexander has replaced Newhouse. Newhouse said he was in a groove at right tackle in offseason workouts, and Tice acknowledged the former Giant “was the leader in the clubhouse” for the right-tackle job.

Newhouse, 28, played left tackle with the Packers in 2011 and in college at TCU. The book on him is that he is much better as a pass blocker than as a run blocker, but Tice didn’t buy that book.

“I was told that, too,” Tice said. “But then when I graded him on tape, I saw a lot of good movement, so I made sure to share the cut-ups with the scouts.”

The Raiders did draft left tackle David Sharpe from Florida in the third round, but they selected him to be a right tackle. Tice loves his upside.

“I know when the guys read this article, they will be mad at what I am about to say,” Tice said. “Ability-wise, talent-wise and in terms of athleticism, he’s got the most. It’s obvious that he was an excellent high school basketball player looking at him: He’s long, has good feet, is smart.”

The issue with Sharpe is the same that Tice had with guard

Gabe Jackson early last season.

“Gabe never played the right side in high school, college or pros,” Tice said, “He was always on the left. He was a little shaky as far as rhythm moving to the right side. And David is going through some of that. It’s not that easy.” New deal: Raiders tight end Lee Smith was asked to restructure his contract and did. He was scheduled to make a $2.75 million base salary but now will make $1 million in salary, plus $1 million in a roster bonus and other incentives. He then beat linebacker Cory

James for a touchdown catch in practice.

Briefly: Amari Cooper sat out practice Tuesday after tweaking something Monday. Del Rio would not comment on the injury, or whether the receiver would be back on the field after the off day Wednesday. … Del Rio was not happy with Tuesday’s practice, saying it “was sloppy,” with too many balls on the ground and too many offside penalties.
