Dolphins’ Tannehill will miss ’17 season

-

Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase says he’s confident quarterback Ryan Tannehill will be ready for the 2018 season, but 2017 is out.

The Dolphins placed Tannehill on injured reserve Saturday because of his left knee injury, sidelining him for the entire season. Tannehill and the Dolphins decided surgery will be the best option for his torn anterior cruciate ligament.

When asked about his conversation with Tannehill, Gase said: “It was probably tougher for me. It’s more and more real. It’s unfortunate for him. He worked so hard.”

Tannehill’s replacement, Jay Cutler, practiced for the second time Saturday and might play in Thursday’s exhibition game against the Baltimore Ravens.

“If he feels good enough to go on Thursday, where the pocket feel is there and he feels like he’s in a good place, then he’ll go,” Gase said.

Cutler, who parted with the Chicago Bears after eight seasons, postponed retirement and his TV job, signing a $10 million, one-year contract.

Tannehill missed the final four games of last season with two sprained ligaments in his knee, and he reinjured it a week into training camp. Saturday’s games: Quarterback Jared Goff led the Rams on a touchdown drive in the opening minutes, and backup kicker Travis Coons made a tie-breaking 36-yard field goal with 6:11 left in host Los Angeles’ 13-10 preseason victory over the Cowboys. Goff was 3-for-4 for 34 yards while playing eight snaps in the opener for both teams . ... Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, playing his first game since breaking his right leg late last season, completed 2 of 3 passes for 15 yards in a 7-3 loss to the host Jets in the preseason opener for both teams. Josh McCown started for New York and was 3-for-4 passing for 72 yards and a touchdown. Briefly: Washington placed former Stanford linebacker Trent Murphy on injured reserve with a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee, and signed Jamari Staples to bolster its injury-depleted wide receiver corps. Murphy, Washington’s top draft choice in 2014, was hurt in a 23-3 loss to Baltimore on Thursday . ... The Vikings waived running back Bishop Sankey with an injured designation after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the preseason opener Thursday. Sankey can be placed on injured reserve after clearing waivers.
