Stanford freshman in amateur finals

Stanford freshman Albane Valenzuela and Sophia Schubert advanced to the 36-hole finals of the 117th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championsh­ip at the San Diego Country Club.

Valenzuela, 19, who just finished her freshman year at Stanford, defeated Lilia Kha-Tu Vu, 19, of Fountain Valley (Orange County), 3 and 2. Valenzuela would be the first player from Switzerlan­d to win a USGA championsh­ip and the first Cardinal golfer to win the women’s title since 1983.

Schubert, 21, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., defeated 13-year-old Chia Yen Wu of Chinese Taipei, 2-up. Schubert, who will be a senior at Texas, would be the first Longhorn since 1996 to claim the title and would break a nine-year streak of champions under the age of 20. Motor sports: Sam Hornish Jr. dominated in his home state to win the XFinity Mid-Ohio Challenge in Lexington.

Hornish, from Defiance, Ohio, took the lead from rookie Daniel Hemric on lap 62 of 75 after the seventh caution at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He beat him by 1.335 seconds.

Rookie Matt Tifft, a Hinckley, Ohio, native was third, 2.373 seconds back of Hornish.

Darrell Wallace Jr. made the most of his first NASCAR Truck Series race in three years, holding off a late challenge from Christophe­r Bell to win at Michigan Internatio­nal Speedway in Brooklyn. WNBA: Alyssa Thomas had 21 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and Jonquel Jones added 19 points, 16 boards and five blocked shots to help the host Connecticu­t Sun beat the Dallas Wings 96-88 . ... Isabelle Harrison scored 23 points and the San Antonio Stars beat visiting Atlanta 84-68, handing the Dream their seventh straight loss . ... Krystal Thomas had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and the host Washington Mystics beat the Indiana Fever 100-80 in a game delayed 48 minutes because of water on the court . ... Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd scored 20 points apiece, and the Seattle Storm beat the host Phoenix Mercury 98-89 in their first game since Gary Kloppenbur­g took over as their interim coach. Obituary: Longtime NHL coach and general manager Bryan Murray has died of colon cancer at 74. He worked in the league in some capacity for 35 straight seasons. Mr. Murray, won the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year with the Capitals in 1983-84 and reached the Stanley Cup Finals with the Senators in 2007. Tennis: Roger Federer advanced to the Rogers Cup final in Montreal with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Robin Haase. The second-seeded Federer, 36, will face 20-year-old Alexander Zverev, a 6-4, 7-5 winner over 18-year-old Denis Shapovalov.

Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the Rogers Cup final in Toronto with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sloane Stephens. The sixthseede­d Wozniacki eliminated Stephens in a tidy 83 minutes at Aviva Centre. She will play Elina Svitolinai­n Sunday’s final; Svitolina routed defending champion Simona Halep 6-1, 6-1.
