Halep, Muguruza in Cincinnati final

-

Simona Halep moved within a victory of the No. 1 ranking, needing just 54 minutes to cruise past Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-1 in the Western & Southern Open semifinals near Cincinnati, and can displace Karolina Pliskova at the top of the ranking with a win over Garbiñe Muguruza on Sunday.

The fourth-ranked Muguruza reached her first W&S final with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over defending champion Pliskova.

The men’s final will feature Grigor Dimitrov, who outlasted John Isner 7-6 (4), 7-6 (10) in the first men’s semifinal, and Nick Kyrgios, who beat David Ferrer 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4). Basketball: Greece’s basketball federation accused the Milwaukee Bucks and the NBA of hatching a plan to prevent Giannis Antetokounmpo from playing in the European championship.

About an hour after Antetokounmpo posted on social media that he was unavailable because of a knee injury, the federation attacked the Bucks and the NBA in a statement, describing an “organized and well-staged plan” to keep Antetokounmpo from playing in the Eurobasket this month.

The NBA issued a statement saying Antetokounmpo is indeed hurt. Antetokounmpo’s four-year, $100 million contract with the Bucks begins in September.

In the WNBA, Glory Johnson had 23 points and 13 rebounds and the host Dallas Wings beat the Atlanta Dream 90-86. Boxing: Terence Crawford stopped Julius Indongo in the third round in Lincoln, Neb., to become the undisputed world champion at 140 pounds. The fight was the first four-belt unification bout since 2004, when Bernard Hopkins stopped Oscar De La Hoya to claim all the belts in the 160-pound division. Crawford (32-0, 23 knockouts) held the WBC and WBO belts; Namibia’s Indongo (22-1, 11 KOs) was the WBA and IBF champion.
