NEWS OF THE DAY
_1 Powerball prize: Powerball officials say there was no grand prize winner in Saturday’s drawing, meaning one of the nation’s largest lottery jackpots will continue growing. Maura McCann of the New Hampshire Lottery said no ticket matched all six numbers after the drawing. The winning numbers are: 17, 19, 39, 43, 68 and Powerball 13. The new jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing is $650 million, which would be the third-largest jackpot in U.S. history. The odds of winning the giant prize is 1 in 292.2 million.
_2 Confederate monument: Police arrested a man who they say damaged a Confederate monument at an Indianapolis park with a hammer. Anthony Ventura, 30, was being held Sunday on a charge of criminal mischief. Police arrested him Saturday in Garfield Park, where a 35-foot tall granite tower has plaques listing the names of 1,616 Confederate prisoners who died while held at the city’s Camp Morton. The vandalism came days after city officials began discussing whether the monument should be moved. Cities nationwide are removing Confederacy-related monuments after a deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va.
_3 Bus crash: A bus overturned after colliding with a tractortrailer Sunday on a Pennsylvania interstate, sending more than two dozen people to hospitals. State police said the rig’s front end collided with the rear of the bus around 3:30 a.m. on Interstate 78 in Williams Township, about 65 miles north of Philadelphia. All 26 people on the small, private bus were taken to hospitals.
_4 Carjacking arrest: A man suspected in a string of carjackings in two states has been arrested in Utah, authorities said. Police said the carjackings started Friday after the man — who was not immediately identified — dropped a woman with a stab wound off at a hospital in San Bernardino. Investigators believe the man injured the woman, who is expected to survive, said San Bernardino police Sgt. Steve Turner. The man pulled a gun on a security guard and carjacked a driver in the hospital parking lot, Turner said. He then drove about 40 miles north to Victorville, where he stole a second car. Authorities said the man carjacked a third motorist in Mesquite, Nev., before he was arrested Saturday in Utah.
_5 Homeless donations: A high school teacher in West Jordan, Utah, is getting married next month. But instead of registering for a blender or stemware, she’s asking for shoes and backpacks to give to homeless children at her school. Copper Hills High School teacher Rickee Stewart said she was shocked when she found out more than 100 homeless students attend her school. The realization prompted Stewart to tell her wedding guests they can donate to her homeless student project in lieu of gifts, KSL-TV reported. Donations have now been pouring in from people not even on her guest list — and people who don’t even live in Utah, Stewart said. “It’s pure kindness of strangers,” Stewart said.
