Muguruza, Dimitrov win Cincinnati titles

-

Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza got another trophy in her breakthrough summer, beating a player who can’t quite get to No. 1.

Muguruza defeated Simona Halep 6-1, 6-0 for her first Western & Southern Open title near Cincinnati, denying Halep yet another chance to ascend to No. 1 in the WTA rankings.

It was the third time this season Halep needed a win to move up to No. 1 and couldn’t get it.

In the men’s bracket, seventhseeded Grigor Dimitrov won his first ATP Masters title, beating Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-5. WNBA: Tina Charles scored 19 points and Epiphanny Prince added 15 to help host New York beat the Minnesota Lynx 70-61, clinching a playoff berth for the Liberty. The Liberty (17-12) have won five straight games, including beating the top three teams in the league the past three games.

Before the game, Minnesota forward Plenette Pierson, a twotime WNBA champion, said she will retire after the season.

Elsewhere in the WNBA, Kristi Toliver had 12 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter to help the visiting Washington Mystics beat the Indiana Fever 87-82 to clinch a playoff spot . ... Alyssa Thomas had 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, Jonquel Jones added 20 points and eight rebounds as the host Connecticut Sun beat the Phoenix Mercury 94-66 . ... Breanna Stewart had 19 points and nine rebounds and she was one of five Seattle Storm players to score in double figures in a 103-66 rout at the Chicago Sky.
