Ump Wendlestedt out after hit on mask

-

Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt is being treated for concussionlike symptoms after being struck in the mask.

Wendelstedt will not work the rest of Cleveland’s series against the Boston Rex Sox after he was hit flush on the protective mask by Boston’s Joe Kelly on Monday night.

He was squatting behind catcher Christian Vazquez, who failed to stop Kelly’s fastball, which hit Wendelstedt. He stayed in the game for the remainder of the sixth inning but left at the start of the seventh.

Pat Hoberg has replaced Wendelstedt for the final three games in the series.

Indians seek Cavs’ input: The Indians have asked their neighbors for help in treating Andrew Miller’s sore knee.

With the All-Star reliever back on the disabled list with tendinitis, the defending AL champions have contacted the Cavaliers to see if there is something more they can do with a condition more common in NBA players.

“Really the best diagnosis is rest,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said before Tuesday’s game against Boston. “I don’t think Andrew or us really wants to just let it be. He wants to see if he can be proactive as he’s been. And we’ll see where that leads.”

The Indians absorbed a double blow, as not only did Miller go back on the disabled list for the second time in 20 days, but starter Danny Salazar was also placed on the 10-day DL with a stiff elbow.

2 Dodgers down: Starting pitcher Alex Wood and team home run leader Cody Bellinger were placed on the Dodgers’ 10-day DL.

Wood was put on the DL for the second time this season because of left shoulder inflammation. Manager Dave Roberts said the move was precautionary. Bellinger sprained his ankle making a play at the outfield wall Sunday.
