Abrupt end for Blackburn

- By Susan Slusser

BALTIMORE — A’s righthander Paul Blackburn left Tuesday’s game after taking a line drive off the side of his right hand, but the rookie said he hopes to make his next start.

“I’m definitely sore, but I’m glad it’s not broken,” Blackburn said. “I couldn’t move my hand, I couldn’t squeeze it. It did not feel good at all.”

Blackburn, who is from Brentwood, worked four shutout innings before Trey Mancini, leading off the fifth, nailed him with a shot up the middle. “Hopefully, we dodged a bullet,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We’ll see how he is in the next couple of days.”

Blackburn has been one of the A’s most pleasant surprises this year, going 3-1 with a 3.22 ERA. He allowed three hits and no runs in four-plus innings Tuesday.

The A’s will have a sixth starter on hand, anyway: Daniel Gossett will be recalled from Triple-A Nashville to start Wednesday’s game at Baltimore. No one is coming out of the rotation, but Sean

Manaea will get a couple of extra days before his next start, with Kendall Graveman sliding in front of him to pitch Friday.

Gossett is 4-4 with a 3.66 ERA in 14 starts at Nashville and 3-6 with a 5.17 ERA in 10 starts with Oakland. Semien update: Shortstop Marcus Semien, who exited Monday’s game because of wrist discomfort, was out of action Tuesday and might be out until Friday. Semien, who had right wrist surgery April 18, said that he was bothered by some scar-tissue issues during Monday’s game. “I just never got loose,” he said.

Since coming off the disabled list July 6, Semien had played in 40 consecutive games before Tuesday.

“He could have a bone sticking out of his arm and he’d fight me on the issue of whether he should be in there or not,” Melvin said.

New reps: After Sean Doolittle was traded and John Axford was designated for assignment last month, the A’s were without a player representative and their first-alternate union rep. Semien, who also was an alternate, moves up to become the player rep, with second baseman Jed Lowrie as an alternate. The other alternate is reliever Liam Hendriks.
