Another heart procedure for Bochy

- By Henry Schulman Henry Schulman is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

Manager Bruce Bochy revealed Tuesday that he will undergo a second ablation procedure on his heart, this time to repair an atrial fibrillation. He expects to have it done in San Diego early next week.

This procedure will take more time and is more invasive than the ablation that Bochy underwent in April to stop a heart flutter, but he still called it routine.

Bochy knew in April that he would have to have the second procedure and considered doing it at the All-Star break, but decided to wait until the end of the season because this one requires more rest.

Bochy expects to return to San Francisco for Giants meetings Oct. 23 and has not altered plans for trips to Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Bochy hopes this ablation will restore his heartbeat to a normal rhythm once and for all. He has felt the symptoms from an irregular heartbeat daily, or every other day, but said it had no effect on his managing. Nor will this procedure impact his ability to continue.

“I don’t want anyone to think this has any effect on my work or abilities moving forward, because it doesn’t,” he said. Cleveland manager Terry

Francona underwent a similar procedure before the AllStar break. He missed the All-Star Game but returned for the second half and has managed since with no interruptions. Jim Harbaugh had a similar procedure when he coached the 49ers in 2012.

Bochy was first hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat in Miami in August 2016 and was given medication. He also had two stents inserted into a blocked artery during spring training in 2015, an issue unrelated to the irregular heartbeat.

Briefly: The fate of the coaches remains up in the air, partly because Phil Nevin, Ron

Wotus and Hensley Meulens are attracting some interest in managerial openings. Most coaches are signed through next year, so general manager

Bobby Evans feels no urgency to settle on changes. … Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez will have part of the left hamate bone in his left hand surgically removed. He played with painful calcification on the bone at season's end.
