Dr. Maria Papaspyrou Mouratoff

-

Our “Lovely” Maria passed away on Sunday, October 8th, 2017 at the age of 91. A highly accomplished mother, grandmother and wife, she will not only be remembered for her sharp intelligence but also her generosity and grace.

She is survived by her loving sons, John and Vasilis Mouratoff, as well as her daughters-in-law, Courtney and Lori Mouratoff. She is deeply loved and greatly missed by her four grandchildren, Alexi, Erin, George and Grayson. She is now reunited with her husband, George, her sister, Athena and her parents Vasilis and Ortensia.

Maria was born in Athens, Greece on May 25th, 1926. As a young girl, she survived the German occupation and Greek Civil War. She often recounted those days with pride of her endurance and sorrow for her community. Her strength was fortified by her sister, Athena, who was her closest friend. After WWII, Maria entered Athens University School of Medicine where she graduated with a medical degree in 1954.

She continued training in internal medicine at Athens University from 1954-1958.

During these years, hematology peaked her interest and she moved to London, England as a research assistant. In England, her professor described her as quiet, efficient and industrious. In 1961, she brought these skills all the way to California. Once here, she studied medical physics, hematology and radioactive isotopes at the University of California, Donner Clinic. She also devoted her time and skill to the Sickle Cell Program at Children’s Hospital, Oakland. She was described by her colleagues as sensitive to her patients needs and well liked.

She married Doctor George John Mouratoff at the Greek Orthodox Church, Oakland on June 1st, 1962. She was overjoyed in 1966 and again in1968, when she was blessed to start a family. As she raised her sons and encouraged her husband, she persisted to follow her own path and became qualified by the California Board of Internal Medicine 1981. She continued to work and care for her patients until the age of 85.

Friends and family are invited to Sunset View Cemetery at the junction of Colusa and Fairmount Avenues in El Cerrito, California for memorial services. Private Viewing is available on Sunday, October 15th from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Funeral service will be on Monday, October 16th at 1:30 PM.
