Not-so-magnificent 7 fall on wild weekend of upsets

-

Cal’s 37-3 upset of No. 8 Washington State and Syracuse’s 27-24 shocker over No. 2 Clemson on Friday night were only a sign of things to come.

Five more ranked teams fell Saturday, including two more ranked in the top 10. The season-high seven ranked teams losing upended the Associated Press Top 25, and the Pac-12 got shut out of the top 10 as a result.

Washington State tumbled all the way to No. 15, and Washington, which was upset 13-7 by Arizona State, fell from fifth to 12th in the poll.

Stanford moved up only one spot to No. 22 after thumping Oregon 49-7 on Saturday night and remains the lowest-ranked of the four Pac-12 teams in the poll. USC, which overcame Utah 28-27, moved up two spots to No. 11 to become the conference’s highest-ranked team.

Penn State took advantage of the vacuum, climbing to No. 2 in Clemson’s place despite being idle. As usual, there was one constant: Alabama remained No. 1, receiving all 61 first-place votes.

Hawaii 37, San Jose State 26:

In a game that ended early Sunday Pacific time, Diocemy Saint Juste had a school-record 39 carries for 202 yards and two touchdowns to help the host Rainbow Warriors (3-4, 1-3 Mountain West) knock off the Spartans (1-7, 0-4), who have lost six straight.

Montel Aaron hit Rashead Johnson for a 59-yard score to cut the Spartans’ deficit to 21-20 going into the fourth quarter, and after Saint Juste’s second 1-yard touchdown, Johnson returned the kickoff 98 yards for a score, but the PAT-attempt was blocked by Viane Moala and returned 98 yards by Rojesterman Farris II to make it 30-26.
