Even the overreacting, gunjumping sports media usually wait until about one-quarter of the way into the NBA season before beginning the MVP debate. But I’m like a kid on Christmas morning, can’t wait.

The envelope, please. Dramatic pause. Stephen Curry!

Hometown call? Am I sucking up to the local superstar? Maybe. But I feel it. When Curry wins this season’s MVP, he will have earned it. He won No. 1 by shocking the basketball world with his shooting. He won No. 2 by leading his team to 73 wins.

This time, Curry will have to overwhelm his growing army of skeptics and critics. That army will serve as motivation, as if he needs any. Other factors:

Edginess. Curry told the local media: “Little-known fact about what I did this summer: I was in the gym.” Curry is aware that haters will say he spent his offseason making TV commercials and being famous. Curry’s mud fight with President Trump only added to Curry’s edge and sense of mission.

Trash talk. Curry must cash the checks his teammates are writing with their mouths. Draymond Green is already mocking all would-be title contenders, and Kevin Durant is openly brimming with confidence. If you thought the Warriors were obnoxious overdogs

lastseason ... Underdog. Vegas oddsfolks agree that Curry is no higher than No. 7 in the MVP race. Curry nods and goes back to the gym.

Work. Curry did spend a lot of his summer in the gym. Trainer Brandon Payne (as in pain) swears his man is better/ stronger than ever. Believe.

Adjustment. Last season, Curry spent a lot of time and energy perfecting the team’s new recipe. This season, the Dubs have the chef ’s kiss from the start.

Meanness boost. New power forward Jordan Bell could give the W’s more enforcer muscle to offset and enable the team’s Curry-esque cuteness.

The clock. Curry will turn 30 in March. With that milestone comes awareness of the march of time. Must. Win. Now.

MVP. In the words of Hans and Franz, hear me now and believe me later.
