Hamilton on pole at U.S. Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton stormed through qualifying to grab the pole for Sunday’s U.S. Grand Prix, with title rival Sebastian Vettel getting a big push on his final lap to grab second.

That sets up a Sunday duel in Austin, Texas, as Hamilton chases a possible fourth career season championsh­ip. The Mercedes driver holds a 59point lead over Vettel with four races to go and Vettel will be desperate to push for the win.

Christophe­r Bell raced to his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory, beating dominant Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Erik Jones after they made contact with four laps left at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. NFL: The Jacksonvil­le Jaguars promoted former Raiders receiver Jaydon Mickens to the active roster and waived receiver Max McCaffrey.

Mickens was originally signed by Oakland as an undrafted rookie and spent the entire 2016 season on the Raiders’ practice squad. He was waived before this season and then was signed to Jacksonvil­le’s practice squad.

Soccer: Pablo Dyego scored in the 68th minute as the visiting San Francisco Deltas rallied for a 1-1 tie with North Carolina FC to clinch home-field advantage in the first round of the NASL playoffs. The Deltas (14-5-12, 54 points) will be the No. 2 seed.

The Deltas’ goal came after a corner kick by Dagoberto Pelentier into the box landed at the feet of Deltas defender Reiner Ferreria. His shot was

stopped by goalkeeper Macklin Robinson, but Dyego headed in the rebound.

Manchester United finally lost in the English Premier League, and not where anyone thought it would. Promoted Huddersfie­ld Town won 2-1 for its first win over United in 65 years.

Huddersfie­ld last beat United in March 1952.

First-half goals from Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre, following defensive lapses by United, gave the home side control. Marcus Rashford headed home a late goal to halve the deficit but United couldn’t find the equalizer and a roar greeted the final whistle.

United remained second in the EPL, but dropped to five points behind Manchester City, a 3-0 winner over Burnley.

Also, Chelsea came from behind to beat Watford 4-2 to avoid a third straight defeat.

Elsewhere in Europe, Barcelona regained a four-point cushion atop the Spanish league with a 2-0 win over visiting Malaga and surging Valencia beat Sevilla 4-0 at home to keep pace in second . ... Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund wasted a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt . ... French champion Monaco beat Caen 2-0, breaking a four-game winless streak and moving to within three points of league leader Paris SaintGerma­in.

At the Under-17 World Cup in Goa, India, the United States

lost to England 4-1 in the quarterfin­als. England plays Germany or Brazil on Wednesday in the semifinals. Mali defeated Ghana 2-1 and meets Spain or Iran in the other semifinal. Golf: Justin Thomas fired a 2-under-par 70 in windy conditions to share the lead with fellow American Scott Brown (71) at 9-under 207 after the third round of the PGA Tour’s CJ Cup in Jeju, South Korea.

“I know for a fact I played better today than I did on Thursday when I shot a 9 under,” Thomas said. “It’s just so hard out there. I’ve never played in a place where the wind swirls as much as it does here.”

Anirban Lahiri of India moved into a share of third place with Australian Marc Leishman (71) after a 69.

Tournament host Sergio Garcia will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Andalucia Valderrama Masters in Sotogrande, Spain, after shooting a 3-under 68.

Eun-Hee Ji carded a 3-under 69 to open up a six-stroke lead at 10-under 206 after the third round of the LPGA Tour’s Taiwan Championsh­ip in Taipei.

Bernhard Langer matched the course record with a 9under 63 to take a three-stroke lead in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic in Richmond, Va., the first event in the PGA Tour Champions’ Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.
