In San Francisco, Thursday October 12, Alice D. Ahern, 64, passed away quietly after a brief decline. A native of San Francisco, the only child of Casimir and Helen Dobrowolsk­i, both of Poland. Alice grew up in downtown San Francisco, mastering city life at a very young age. She graduated from St. Rose Academy in 1971, and began studying Biology at UC Berkeley, from which she graduated with her bachelor’s in 1975. At Cal, Alice joined the Sierra Club and frequently participat­ed in trail maintenanc­e trips. She went on to attain a second bachelor’s in Therapeuti­c Recreation from Fresno State in 1977, and used that degree as the Director of Recreation Therapy at French Hospital of San Francisco from 1977 to 1983. In 1973, Alice met another San Franciscan who commuted to Berkeley and loved the great outdoors, Kevin Ahern. They married in 1979 at Notre Dame des Victoires and moved in together in the Upper Haight. She took time off to raise her children, but returned to the work force in 2000, when she began teaching at Belvedere-Hawthorne Nursery Schools in Tiburon. Alice continued to teach up until months before her passing. She loved children, family, and sharing her appreciati­on of art and science with the world. Preceded in death by her father, Casimir, and husband, Kevin, Alice is survived by her mother, Helen, and her children, Brendan and Brian.

Services to be held at St. Brendan Church in San Francisco on Tuesday, October 24 at 10:00 AM.
