Anne Schwarzer
Anne Schwarzer passed away on October 10 at her home at Villa Marin in San Rafael. Her two children were at her side. She was born on May 10, 1929 in Eldorado, Illinois. After attending schools in Eldorado and Harrisburg, Illinois, Mom graduated from Radcliffe College in 1951. That same year she married the love of her life, Bill Schwarzer. They remained married for almost 66 years until his death in January.
Mom spent many hours volunteering in her community. The list of places and organizations that benefited from her efforts is long: MCDS library and book fair, Marin General Hospital Unit A, AAUW of Southern Marin, Sunny Hills, the Mill Valley library (as a member of their board and as a library volunteer), the Marin Museum of the American Indian (as president of the board and a docent), and the Girl Scouts (as a troop leader and a camp counselor named Sneezy). Mom was a life-time member of the Outdoor Art Club in Mill Valley. She served as chair of the Civics and Conservation committee, volunteered at the Well-Baby Clinic for many years and assisted and chaired many other activities, including teas and lunches.
What Mom viewed as her most important accomplishment was smoothing the waters in Dad’s relationships with his children and the people with whom he worked during his career. She was always available to encourage her children emotionally and academically. As a wife she supported Dad during his many careers, trial lawyer, Federal Judge and head of the Federal Judicial Center in Washington D.C. She became close to his clerks, his support staff and all the people with whom he worked, making their lives better in the process. Mom and Dad traveled extensively. There were family trips, legal conferences, judicial conferences and trips to meet lawyers and judges throughout the world.
She is survived by her two children Jane Fields (Stan) and Andrew Schwarzer (Nancy Elder) and five grandchildren, Paul, Tim and Ben Fields and Grace and Max Schwarzer. We would like to express great appreciation for and gratitude to the two people who so greatly improved the last few years of both Mom’s and Dad’s lives, Uraia Rainima and Ana Fatafehi Rabitu.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the Marin Retirement Communities Scholarship Fund of the Marin Community Foundation (5 Hamilton Landing, Suite 200, Novato CA 94949) or the San Rafael Public Library Foundation (P.O. Box 151541, San Rafael CA 94915).
A memorial service is planned at Villa Marin on Saturday October 28 at 3:00 pm.
