FAIRWAY ONE AT PEBBLE BEACH

- — Jeanne Cooper, travel@sfchronicle.com

Pebble Beach Resorts will celebrate its centennial in 2019, but it’s not resting on its laurels, or its links, just yet. The renowned golf resort plans to finish renovating all 454 rooms before hosting the U.S. Open in its centennial year. In August, it opened Fairway One, a handsome mini-lodge that could make any amateur feel like a pro.

Setting: The first fairway of championship Pebble Beach Golf Links, hence the name. Across the street is the ninehole, family-friendly Peter Hay Golf Course, while a short walk leads to shops and dining in the Lodge at Pebble Beach.

The appeal: Living large. The 38 rooms — spread across two cottages and three two-story buildings — start at 660 square feet in size. All include 55-inch TVs, spacious bathrooms, large closets and at least a dozen good places to charge a device; clubby leather chairs and stacked-stone fireplaces add warmth to a neutral palette. The fourbedroom Palmer and Eastwood cottages include 1,000-square-foot living rooms with 17-foot beamed ceilings and photo homages to namesakes Arnold and Clint.

Insider’s tips: Drive 2 miles to Porter’s in the Forest at Poppy Hills Golf Course for Monterey-inspired cuisine from chef Johnny DeVivo, formerly of La Bicyclette and Casanova in Carmel.

Good to know: Cottage suites may be booked individually, just not as far in advance as full cottages. Weekend stays require a two-night minimum; request tee times when booking. The $25 nightly resort fee includes access to the oceanfront Beach & Tennis Club and tips to bell staff, who escort guests from checkin at the Lodge, unload bags and provide shuttle service on demand.

Details: 1700 17-Mile Dr., Pebble Beach. (800) 654-9300, (800) 877-0597, www.pebblebeach.com/accommodations. Garden-view rooms $975, partial ocean-view rooms $1,125 and cottage suites from $3,190 for one bedroom to $6,940 for four, excluding resort fee and 10.5 percent occupancy tax.
