San Jose State adds 13 Californians

-

San Jose State added 13 players, all from California, as part of the early signing period Wednesday. Four of the players are offensive linemen and four are defensive backs.

“I am really excited about the guys joining our program today,” San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan said in a statement. “We addressed some of the needs our program identified through the course of our first season at San Jose State.”

The Spartans, who went 2-11 this season, signed five players from the Bay Area: cornerback Charlie Bostic from Valley Christian, defensive lineman Cade Hall from Bellarmine, linebacker Kyle Harmon from Freedom-Oakley, wide receiver Leki Nunn from Serra and defensive lineman Dimitri Sakalia from Menlo-Atherton. Harmon had committed to Cal last year, but left school before the season started.

Brennan expects to sign another 10-12 players in February.

Frisco Bowl: J’mar Smith threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score as Louisiana Tech spoiled Sonny Dykes’ debut with SMU with a 51-10 win in Frisco, Texas.

Dykes was 22-15 at Louisiana Tech from 2010 to 2012 before leaving for Cal. After he was fired in Berkeley in January, Dykes spent this season as an offensive analyst at TCU before SMU hired him to replace Chad Morris on Dec. 11.

With most of the staff joining Morris at Arkansas, Dykes elected to coach the bowl game and installed graduate assistant G.J. Kinne as offensive coordinator for the game. The move didn’t pay off, as SMU (7-6) fumbled on its first snap and committed turnovers on its first three drives and six times overall.

“Clearly, we didn’t put our best foot forward,” Dykes said. “We’ve got to give Louisiana Tech a lot of credit. They were ready to play. You could see they were a team that’s been to bowl games and had a formula to get their team ready to play.”

Smith completed 15 of 23 passes for 216 yards for Louisiana Tech (7-6), which has won its past four bowl games. Briefly: Defensive lineman Byron Cowart, a former five-star recruit who played two seasons at Auburn, is transferring to Maryland . ... Responding to reports that he has decided to coach again in 2018, Kansas State’s Bill Snyder, 78, said that “I’m in the process” of deciding on next season.
