Red Wings rally to win 4th in row

Anthony Mantha and Gustav Nyquist scored in the third period to lift the Red Wings to their fourth straight victory, a 4-2 decision over Florida in Detroit on Friday night.

The Red Wings wasted a 2-0 lead and had been outplayed for most of the night, but Mantha gave Detroit the lead back on the power play, and Nyquist added a breakaway goal with 4:38 remaining.

Andreas Athanasiou and Tomas Tatar also scored for Detroit. Mike Matheson and Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers.

Florida outshot the Red Wings 29-11 through two periods but still trailed 2-1.

Penguins 4, Islanders 0: Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists and Tristan Jarry stopped 31 shots for his second shutout of the season for visiting Pittsburgh. Daniel Sprong had two goals and an assist, Evgeni Malkin also scored and Dominik Simon added two assists for the Penguins, who had dropped four of six and were coming off a 4-0 loss at home to Carolina the previous night. The twotime defending Stanley Cup champions moved one point back of the Hurricanes for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

Jets 4, Sabres 3: Blake Wheeler and Jacob Trouba each had a goal and an assist as host Winnipeg extended its point streak to five games. Wheeler has a point in five straight games, with five goals and three assists during that span. All five of those goals have been scored in the four games the right wing has played at center in place of injured Mark Scheifele.

Golden Knights 5, Blackhawks 4: Reilly Smith had a goal and two assists, and Vegas topped Chicago for its ninth win in 10 games. Jonathan Marchessau­lt and William Karlsson each had a goal and an assist as expansion Vegas got the win in its first trip to Chicago. Alex Tuch and Cody Eakin also scored, and Malcolm Subban made 28 saves.

Briefly: Rangers forward Chris Kreider, who has been sidelined with a blood clot, will have surgery for a rib resection and is out indefinite­ly . ... The Hurricanes activated forward Marcus Kruger from injured reserve . ... The Golden Knights activated defenseman Luca Sbisa from IR and placed defenseman Jon Merrill on IR with an undisclose­d injury.

Junior hockey: Canada beat Sweden 3-1 to win the world junior championsh­ip in Buffalo, N.Y., the 17th time Canada has won the crown. In the bronzemeda­l game, Trent Frederic scored four times to lead the United States to a 9-3 win over the Czech Republic.
