Haas leads tourney after 5-hole run

Bill Haas played a five-hole stretch in 5-under par and shot a 7-under 64 to take the lead in the PGA Tour’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. Haas birdied Nos. 12 and 13, made a 20-footer for eagle on the par-5 15th and hit to 3 feet to set up another birdie on the par-3 16th, the stadium hole that tripped up Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas. Fowler bogeyed the 16th in a 66 that left him tied with Billy Horschel, Bryson DeChambeau, Chris Kirk and Chesson Hadley.

Chris Paisley shot 7-under 65 for a one-shot clubhouse lead over David Horsey after a weather-interrupte­d first round at the European Tour’s Maybank Championsh­ip in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Cheyenne Woods, niece of Tiger Woods, is one stroke off the lead at the Ladies European Tour opener in Barwon Heads, Australia, despite not practicing because an airline problem delayed the arrival of her clubs. Beth Allen leads at 6-under 67. Soccer: Luis Suarez scored in the second half off a cross by Lionel Messi as host Barcelona defeated Valencia 1-0 in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals. Five-time champion Sevilla drew 1-1 at Leganes in the first leg of the other semifinal. Colleges: Victoria Chun, Colgate’s athletic director, became the first woman to be named to the same post at Yale. WNBA: The Los Angeles Sparks re-signed guard Odyssey Sims for a second season. She averaged 15.9 points and 3.6 assists during the Sparks’ run to the Finals.

Renee Montgomery, who won two WNBA championsh­ips with the Minnesota Lynx, signed a multiyear contract with the Atlanta Dream.
