LGBTQ critics name year’s best in TV, film
“Call Me by Your Name,” its young star, and the TV shows “Big Little Lies” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” have been honored by GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics.
“Call Me” was named film of the year and LGBT film of the year, its star, Timothée Chalamet, best actor, and cast member Michael Stuhlbarg, best supporting actor.
Other film awards went to Laurie Metcalf, supporting actress for “Lady Bird,” beating out odds-on Oscar favorite Allison Janney in “I Tonya”; Greta Gerwig, best director for “Lady Bird”; Sally Hawkins, best actress for “The Shape of Water”; “BPM (Beats Per Minute),” foreign film; Jordan Peele, screenplay, for “Get Out”; “Faces Places,” documentary; “The Shape of Water,” visually striking film of the year; “God’s Own Country,” unsung film; and “Mother,” campy flick of the year.
In the TV category: “Big Little Lies” and “Mrs. Maisel” won for drama and comedy, respectively; Nicole Kidman, actress, for “Big Little Lies”; Kyle MacLachlan, actor, “Twin Peaks: The Return”; “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee,” current affairs program; Kate McKinnon, musical performance of the year, for “(Kellyanne) Conway!” on “Saturday Night Live”; “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” LGBTQ show of the year; “American Gods,” unsung show of the year; “Feud: Bette and Joan.” campy show of the year.
Chalamet also won the rising star of the year award. Kate McKinnon and Jordan Peele tied for Wilde Wit of the Year; Peele won for Wilde Artist of the Year; and the timeless star award went to Meryl Streep.
The organization, comprising more than 200 critics in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, including Chronicle Assistant Managing Editor David Wiegand, announced the winners of their annual Dorian Awards on Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Los Angeles.
Best actor Timothée Chalamet also was named the rising star of the year.
