‘Black Panther’ a blockbuster beyond the movie theaters
“Black Panther,” directed by Oakland native Ryan Coogler, opens in theaters with the first public screenings starting Thursday, Feb. 15. But don’t expect the momentum for the new Marvel movie to slow down after this weekend. Throughout February, which is Black History Month, there will be opportunities to watch the film and celebrate outside the theater.
Oakanda is hosting an adults-only Black Panther Kick-Off and Afrofuturism panel at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the E14 Gallery in Oakland, with cannabisinfused small plates and dancing as part of a preparty for the film’s release. for free admission to watch “Black Panther” at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, during an event that also will introduce children to groups devoted to science, technology, engineering and math education, and other organizations.
The movie house will then host journalist and author Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is the latest writer for the comic book series, for a reading of his new book before a showing of “Black Panther” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20. Participating Dolby Cinemas in the AMC chain are also giving away Coates’ “Black Panther No. 1” comic book at select screenings this weekend.
