Arizona allegation disappoints coach
Former Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery, honored Saturday at Maples Pavilion along with his 1997-98 Final Four team, said he is disappointed that Arizona coach Sean Miller is involved in the latest disclosures in the college basketball bribery scandal.
He said he likes Miller and hopes ESPN’s report isn’t true that Miller talked with an agent’s assistant about paying recruit Deandre Ayton $100,000.
“It doesn’t surprise me, and there’s going to be more” schools implicated, Montgomery said.
Montgomery is a member of the NCAA task force examining the scandal. The panel has made its recommendations to the NCAA, but he would not disclose them. The panel meets again Sunday and Monday at Stanford.
“It’s a big, big job and the commission can’t solve all the problems,” he said. “We’ve got to beef up the (NCAA) enforcement staff.”
