Revived trilevel Victorian
Former Lion Pub in Pacific Heights is a live/work space
Historically, the structure featured three units. A bar on the lower level, an in-law suite used for storage, and the house above the bar. Murphy and his team spent a year reconfiguring the structure at the corner of Sacramento and Divisadero streets.
A blend of traditional grandeur and modern flair radiates throughout the home. Walnut flooring spans the residence as wide millwork traces around the rooms. Plaster ceiling medallions and a triple parlor with pocket doors harkens to Victorian design ideals. Four original fireplaces were also salvaged during the renovation that included a rebuilt foundation.
“We felt that the Victorian architecture was a very strong starting point,” Murphy said. “We tried to keep the spaces and structure in the house, while making modern updates. Nobody wants antique bathrooms.”
Indeed, the bathrooms are far from antiquities. The master bathroom features dual Duravit sinks, a soaking tub and a shower with Waterworks fixtures.
An array of high-end appliances outfit a kitchen that opens to a mahogany deck. A Wolf range, Bosch dishwasher and Sub-Zero refrigerator highlight the tools available within the chef ’s entertainment space. Flos pendant lighting illuminates the kitchen’s marble counters with waterfall edges.
“The finishes we’ve used in this home are the same as those in our estate-level projects or venture capital offices,” Murphy said.
Four bedrooms, including the owner’s suite, are located on the upper level. The lower level hosts an au pair suite with a full bathroom and kitchenette. This ground floor also houses the office, which uses two layers of drywall and insulation to absorb noise.
Murphy’s favorite rooms are found in the corners of the home. There, multiple outlooks brighten the interior and frame neighborhood views.
“The rooms on the corners are dynamic, fun rooms,” he said. “There’s windows everywhere, and there’s so much activity on the street.”
