ADDING UP FALL’S MICRO TRENDS
Style’s top four trends for fall 2018 from New York Fashion Week couldn’t be more different from one another. On one side of the spectrum: softness and extreme subtlety; on the other, excessive color, print and shape. For a helpful cheat sheet of what’s coming this fall, check out our trend equations that show how different collections are reacting to the cultural zeitgeist. 1. ROUGH ROMANCE There was a softness to many of the collections, but with some fraying around the edges and a touch of deconstruction, best demonstrated by the Brock Collection. Style equation: Coco Chanel + Miss Havisham = Brock Collection
2. POWER NEUTRALS The 1970s have been trending hard in recent years. This season, Derek Lam’s dynamic use of neutral colors (accented with pops of red and navy), uncluttered lines and easy silhouettes recall some of the best home design of the 1960s and ’70s as well as the era’s view of futurism.
Style equation: Danish chair + Kubrick’s “2001” = Derek Lam
3. ANIMAL VULGARITY Truly outrageous ’80s style made a comeback on the runways with Tom Ford’s neon animal-print collection. The pops of acid green and violent violet mixed on ultra-body conscious fits (and “pussy power” shoes and purses) brought to mind the decade’s aerobics fitness fad and cartoon rockers “Jem and the Holograms.”
Style equation: Jem + ’80s workout wear = Tom Ford
4. BORROWED FROM THE BOOGEYMAN Marc Jacobs loves to create homages to other designers and pop culture figures in his collections. This season, Jacobs also looked to the ’80s, seemingly referencing some of Yves Saint Laurent’s best work from the decade. Also in the mix: The hat-wearing horror monster Mr. Babadook from the Australian film “The Babadook,” a figure adopted in the past year by gay culture as one of their own.
Style equation: YSL + Mr. Babadook = Marc Jacobs
