Giants’ ’58 S.F. debut a gigantic news story
San Francisco Chronicle headlines have celebrated the end of wars, triumphs in outer space and a people’s rebellion against bad coffee.
But if you cheer for the orange and black, there is no better headline in newspaper history than the one that appeared on April 16, 1958.
“WE MURDER THE BUMS”
The celebration of a win after the very first San Francisco Giants baseball game, in giant type on top of the front page, was an exclamation point on a perfect day at the ballpark — including 72-degree weather, sold-out Seals Stadium and an 8-0 blowout win over their new/old rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Police arrested a man in San Francisco on Friday who was accused of stealing guns in the South Bay and threatening to go to the city to kill people, authorities said.
Dustin Hamilton, 44, was taken into custody without incident about 6 a.m. around Fourth and King streets, near AT&T Park, after several people recognized him and called the police. Two firearms in his possession were recovered, police said.
Hamilton, identified as a “transient” by police, had stolen the firearms from a home in San Jose on Wednesday night, authorities said. He left behind a note, threatening to kill civilians and police officers in San Francisco, officials said.
Police in San Jose and San Francisco enlisted the public’s help in their search for the man.
Hamilton, who is on probation, had two outstanding felony warrants in San Francisco for assault and vandalism, officials said.
Hamilton was booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of stealing firearms and making threats, and for the two outstanding warrants.
