Browns trade Hogan to Washington

The Cleveland Browns traded their third quarterbac­k of the offseason, sending Kevin Hogan to Washington.

The deal includes swapping sixth-round picks. Cleveland acquires the 188th pick from Washington for No. 205.

The Stanford alum follows Cody Kessler and DeShone Kizer out the door in Cleveland, which has the first overall pick in the draft. The Browns have traded with Buffalo for quarterbac­k Tyrod Taylor, the expected starter, and signed Drew Stanton to a two-year deal.

Hogan, 25, threw for 621 yards, four touchdowns and seven intercepti­ons and rushed for a score in eight games with Cleveland, including one start. He will compete with Colt McCoy to back up Alex Smith in Washington.

The Raiders signed freeagent cornerback Senquez Golson and defensive end Armonty Bryant. Golson, 24, was drafted in the second round in 2015 by the Pittsburgh Steelers but has not played in an NFL game. Bryant has appeared in 36 games, mostly with the Browns from 2013-15.

Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis has been suspended four games by the NFL for testing positive for a banned substance. Davis posted a video on Twitter acknowledg­ing he tested positive for an estrogen blocker but said “in no way would I ever do anything to cheat this game.” College basketball: Jalen Brunson of national champion Villanova and A’ja Wilson of South Carolina won the John R. Wooden Award as national players of the year. Brunson is the second player to win the national title and Wooden Award in the same year, and the first Wildcats player to earn the Wooden honor. Wilson is expected to be the first pick in the WNBA draft.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal returned to action after a long injury layoff, defeating Philipp Kohlschrei­ber to leave host Spain even with Germany in the Davis Cup quarterfin­als in Nashville. Nadal hadn’t played since the Australian Open because of a right hip injury. John Isner beat Joris De Loore and Sam Querrey beat Ruben Bemelmans to pull the U.S. closer to its first spot in the Davis Cup semifinals since 2012.

Julia Gorges defeated defending champion Daria Kasatkina to reach the semifinals of the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, S.C. Gorges will face No. 8 seed Anastasija Sevastova, who beat Kristyna Pliskova. Madison Keys, the U.S. Open runner-up last year, also advanced, prevailing in an all-American match with Bernarda Pera.
