After taking liner off leg, Treinen says he’s all right

ARLINGTON, Texas — He took a 105-mph liner off his lower right leg Tuesday night, but A’s closer Blake Treinen said not only that he was fine the following day but also that he believed he would have been available to pitch in the finale against the Rangers if needed.

“Honestly, it’s not much of a bruise right now,” Treinen said. “Probably in a couple of days, I think. And if not, then praise the Lord, because that was pretty hard off my leg.”

Treinen said the most disconcerting thing was that he lost the feeling in his leg after the drive by Shin-Soo Choo hit him in the eighth inning. “It whacked my nerve or something — my leg went numb for a while,” he said. “I didn’t think it would be smart to not have

my best on the mound. I didn’t even go after the ball, because I couldn’t feel anything. But (on Wednesday), I can move with no issues.”

The ball struck right to the outside of Treinen’s right shin, but didn’t strike the bone. He didn’t have an X-ray, he said.

Asked if he’d be comfortable using Treinen on Wednesday, manager Bob Melvin said, “I would. Very much so. ... That hit him really good, so for him to be available is terrific.”

Reliever acquired in trade: The A’s have added another pitcher to provide long relief, picking up right-hander Wilmer Font in a deal with Los

Angeles.

“This is a guy the front office has talked about before,” Melvin said. “He led the (Pacific Coast League) in strikeouts last year and has a big arm. He’s not only potential relief but he’s a potential starter.”

Oakland sent minor-league lefty Logan Salow, 23, to the Dodgers to complete the deal. The team has not made a corresponding move to put Font on the 25-man roster, but Lou Trivino, recalled when Yusmeiro Petit went on the bereavement list, is the most likely reliever to be sent down to make room for Font. When Petit returns from Venezuela, Chris Bassitt, who had been recalled to provide length in the bullpen, could be the odd man out.

Font, 27, is 0-2 with a 11.32 ERA and a .383 opponent average allowed this season, and he has given up five homers, most among big-league relievers, in 101⁄3 innings. In nine seasons in the minor leagues, Font recorded 730 strikeouts in 6182⁄3 innings, an average of 10.62 per nine innings.

Salow, a sixth-round pick from Kentucky in 2017, was 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA and .063 opponent average allowed at Class A Beloit.
