Irwin Lionel Marcus passed away from metastatic skin cancer on April 15, 2018, at his home in Burlingame, California. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Sonia B.Marcus, his son, Alan D. Marcus, and his sisters-in-law, Hanna Marcus and Diane F. Marcus. His daughter, Eleanor L. Marcus-Callison pre-deceased him as well as his parents, Rose and Herman Marcus and his brothers, Sanford A. Marcus and Hubert C. Marcus. A native San Franciscan, Irwin was a graduate of Lowell High School, and received an undergradu­ate degree from the University of California, Berkeley. His dental degree was received from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, School of Dentistry, San Francisco, CA. He earned his degree in orthodonti­cs at University of Pennsylvan­ia, School of Dentistry, Philadelph­ia, PA. Irwin was a life member of the American Dental Associatio­n, served on the faculty of his alma mater dental school, and received many profession­al honors throughout his career which he practiced for 38 years in San Francisco and Millbrae. Communitie­s and organizati­ons benefited greatly from the expertise, time and talent that Irwin energetica­lly and graciously gave to them. Irwin was a veteran of the Korean :ar when he served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant.

Irwin was a well loved, admired and respected man with a boundless sense of joie de vivre, an unstoppabl­e sense of humor that always brought a smile to those around him, and a generosity of spirit that helped and sustained many people in their lives. To his family and friends, Irwin was sweet, kind, attentive and engaging. One always had a sense of happiness and well being when Irwin was with them.

Grave side services will be held on Friday, April 27, 2018, at 1:30pm, Gan Hazikaron, Skylawn Memorial Park, Highway #92 at Skyline Boulevard, San Mateo, CA. En lieu of flowers, it is suggested that a contributi­on be made in Irwin’s name to a charity of your choice.
