Grrrl Brigade’s show honors unsung heroes

- — Maxine Marshall

Grrrl Brigade is a leadership development program that uses dance training and performance opportunities to empower San Francisco’s girls. The program is created and supported by Dance Brigade, the high energy, all-women dance troupe that runs Dance Mission Theater.

Grrrl Brigade celebrates its 15th anniversary with “Dancing on the Edge of the World.” Like Dance Brigade, Grrrl Brigade’s works speak to social issues: “Dancing on the Edge of the World” is based on Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States,” while the new work is set to the thrum of taiko drums and, as the Brigade puts it, “honors those who have truly built our America.”

The Saturday, April 28, show includes a silent auction and gala reception with proceeds to benefit Grrrl Brigade.

“Dancing on the Edge of the World”: 7 p.m. Saturday, April 28; 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29. $20-$100. Cowell Theater, 2 Marina Blvd, S.F. (415) 826-4441. www.dancemission.com
