Mets’ deGrom hyperextends elbow while swinging bat

-

Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom left his start against Atlanta on Wednesday night after hyperextending his right elbow.

DeGrom was injured while striking out swinging in the third inning. He returned to the dugout and told manager Mickey Callaway his arm hurt, but he wanted to keep pitching. DeGrom pitched smoothly through the heart of Atlanta’s order in the fourth, but then told the staff his biceps was sore and left for the clubhouse after 46 pitches.

DeGrom was sent for an MRI exam. Callaway said he did not know how long deGrom could be out.

“We’re not quite sure what the deal is,” Callaway said. “We won’t have any information until tomorrow . ... I’m sure I won’t sleep very good.” Montgomery update: Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery, who left a start Tuesday after one inning, is expected to be out at least six weeks because of a strained flexor tendon in his left arm. He was placed on the disabled list Wednesday.

“He won’t throw for three weeks,” manager Aaron Boone said. “This is not great news. Not worst-case news, either.”

Domingo German will slide into the rotation and start Sunday against Cleveland.

Injury report: Dodgers lefthander Hyun-Jin Ryu left his start against the Diamondbacks with a left groin strain . ... White Sox second baseman Yoan Moncada left a game against the Cardinals with left hamstring tightness. He is listed as day to day . ... Atlanta shortstop Dansby Swanson left the game against the Mets with a sore left wrist . ... Washington second baseman Daniel Murphy, recovering from offseason right knee surgery, said he is feeling discomfort when he runs. “I still have a little bit of a hitch in my giddy-up,” Murphy said. “I am not running the way I would if I was 100 percent.”

Briefly: The Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with Maricopa County, Ariz., that, among other things, would give the franchise the right to explore rebuilding Chase Field or moving to another site within the county. The memorandum of understanding also gives the Diamondbacks complete control of Chase, the Phoenix ballpark completed when the franchise was born in 1998 . ... The Yankees promoted right-hander David Hale from the minors . ... The Rangers claimed catcher Carlos Perez off waivers from Atlanta.
