A 21-year-old Discovery Bay man was killed and another man was seriously wounded in a shooting Tuesday night in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood, officials said.

The deceased victim, identified by the city medical examiner as Raheem Gilbert, was shot along with another man just after 7 p.m. on the 1400 block of Thomas Avenue, police said.

Gilbert “was very loving, very sweet. He was the sweetheart of all the kids,” said Katherina Messina, Gilbert’s great aunt. “I’m tired of this violence. This violence all over the world.”

The second victim in the shooting, who was identified as a 22-yearold man, suffered lifethreatening injuries, police said.

Gilbert’s family has yet to hear from authorities as to whether he was the

intended target or the victim of a random shooting.

“We don’t know what happened, we don’t know why, we don’t know anything,” Messina said. “We just knew he was shot last night, went to the hospital and died at the hospital. We don’t even know what it was about, what it was involving or if he was just a bystander.”

Gilbert spent most of his childhood in San Francisco, but was most recently living and working in Sacramento.

“I’m just so sad what happened to him. He was a good kid, a really good kid,” said Carlos Zuluaga, Gilbert’s co-worker at Radiator Express Warehouse in Sacramento.

The two men worked together for nearly 10 months at the automotive warehouse, where they spent their break time talking about cars and dogs, especially Gilbert’s pit bull, which he often brought with him to work.

“We would all feed him and take care of it,” Zuluaga said, adding that Gilbert was “a great guy, really nice guy. Really shy.”

No suspect has been identified or arrested in the attack, and police have not released details about the circumstances of the shooting or a possible motive.
