United States shocks Canada at hockey worlds

Cam Atkinson scored the winner for the United States to prevail over Canada 5-4 after a penalty shootout in their opening game at the world ice hockey championsh­ip in Herning, Denmark, on Friday.

Dylan Larkin scored twice for the United States to hand Canada a bitter start to its quest for a third world title in four years.

“Hopefully, we’ll get better as the tournament goes on,” said U.S. captain Patrick Kane. “We can play better than that.”

Also, Olympic champion Russia thrashed France 7-0, defending champion Sweden blanked Belarus 5-0, and Denmark started the first championsh­ip on home ice by beating Germany, the runner-up at the Pyeongchan­g Games, 3-2 also after a penalty shootout.

College baseball: Andrew Daschbach and Alec Wilson each had three of Stanford’s 14 hits as the second-ranked Cardinal (35-6, 15-4 Pac-12) rolled to a 12-1 victory at Utah (12-30, 6-13). Tristan Beck (7-2) limited the Utes to a run on five hits in six innings . ... Andrew Vaughn hit his 20th homer of the season but Cal (25-18, 10-12 Pac-12) fell 11-4 at USC (20-21, 8-14) . ... USF (25-21, 14-8) overtook Pepperdine (22-18, 12-7) for first place in the WCC with a 6-4 win. Thomas Ponticelli (72⁄3 innings) and Brendan Jenkins combined on a six-hitter for the Dons.

College basketball: After landing German forward Oscar da Silva and Australian guard Isaac White last year, Stanford men’s coach Jerod Haase has added another foreign player, Lithuanian center Lukas Kisunas.

The 6-9, 245-pounder, who helped Brewster Academy in New Hampshire to New England prep school league title the pst two years, joins guard Cormac Ryan, center Keenan Fitzmorris and guard Bryce Wills in the 2018 class. — Tom FitzGerald

⏩ Evan Fitzner will leave St. Mary’s and use his final year of eligibilit­y as a graduate transfer at Indiana. The 6-foot-10 forward started every game in each of his first two seasons with the Gaels, but spent most of the past season as a reserve, averaging 5 points per game. Fitzner's game is based on his three-point shooting; he made 126 threes in his St. Mary’s career, hitting 41.4 percent from beyond the arc. — Steve Kroner

Motor sports: Kyle Larson gave Chevrolet a needed boost, turning a lap of 158.103 mph to win the pole at Dover (Del.) Internatio­nal Speedway for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup race. Kevin Harvick joins Larson on the front row. Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. completed the top five.

Soccer: Brighton secured English Premier League football for another season, avoiding relegation by beating Manchester United 1-0 . ... French league champion Paris Saint-Germain no longer can reach 100 points after being held at Amiens to a 2-2 draw. PSG has 92 points with two games left.
