A’s beat: Catcher Maxwell to miss Toronto series on restricted list.
BOSTON — The A’s were to place catcher Bruce Maxwell on the restricted list after Wednesday’s game and recall catcher Josh Phegley for the team’s four-game series at Toronto.
As The Chronicle reported Sunday, Maxwell is not eligible for entry into Canada because he has not yet been sentenced for an incident last fall in which he allegedly waved a gun at a food delivery person in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Maxwell has a plea agreement in place in which he will plead guilty to disorderly conduct, but because the sentencing is not until June 4, he is still facing charges that include assault with a deadly weapon. Under Canadian immigration laws, a charge with a gun enhancement can prevent entry.
Phegley, a regular with the A’s in past years, is batting .224 with Triple-A Nashville. Lefthanded hitting Beau Taylor also was a consideration — he’s batting .288 — but he is not on the 40-man roster.
Kaprielian slowed: Minorleague starter James Kaprielian, a major piece in the Sonny Gray deal with the Yankees in July, is dealing with some shoulder soreness as he returns from Tommy John surgery. Kaprielian will resume his rehab program once the soreness subsides, according to A’s general manager David Forst.
Setbacks are common when recovering from elbow ligament replacement surgery. Kaprielian had hoped to be throwing in games in June or July; fellow minor-league starter Daulton Jefferies, who had Tommy John surgery the same week as Kaprielian, will start throwing in extended spring training games next month.
Jefferies, the A’s secondround pick out of Cal in 2016, could be pitching with Class A Stockton in July if his rehab continues to progess well.
Manager Bob Melvin said that pitchers Paul Blackburn (forearm) and Liam Hendriks (hip) threw to hitters at Class A Stockton and that outfielder Boog Powell (knee) has started to do baseball activity.
