Killed was his 26-year-old daughter, Katelyn Tyler Self, who was a Gaston County Sheriff ’s Office deputy, and his daughter-in-law, Amanda Self, who was a nurse. The Gaston Gazette reported that Amanda Self was the wife of Roger Self ’s son, Gaston County Police Officer Josh Self, who also was seriously injured, along with Roger Self ’s wife, Diane, and the 13-year-old daughter of Josh and Amanda Self. They are all expected to survive their injuries. The Courier Post reports the Cherry Hill High School East prom tickets urged students to “party like it’s 1776” during the event at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center. Principal Dennis Perry said in a letter to the community posted on his Twitter account Friday that some people were offended, and it was “insensitive and irresponsible” not to recognize that “not all communities can celebrate what life was like in 1776.” He says he especially wants to apologize to black students “who I have let down by not initially recognizing the inappropriateness of this wording.”
_3 Boy rescued: Emergency crews rescued a 3-year-old boy who fell into a manure pit on a farm near Philadelphia. Emergency responders were called to the Honey Brook Township farm at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday after the child fell into the six- to 10-foot pit inside a large barn. Fire crews tried to get in to help but quickly became stuck, and as they developed a plan they tried to calm the frightened victim. Two rescuers with rope harnesses worked their way inside, and after building a plywood platform were able to move through the pit to the victim. Officials say the boy was alert when he was removed on a stretcher and taken to Ephrata Community Hospital with minor injuries.
_4 Campaign over: A North Dakota politician accused in a peeping incident at a college campus says he is dropping out of the race for secretary of state. Will Gardner announced an end to his campaign Sunday on social media. The Republican’s withdrawal from the race came two days after the Fargo Forum reported on the 2006 incident in which he was accused of peeping through a window at a North Dakota State University women’s dormitory. Gardner pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was given a 30-day suspended jail sentence and fined $225. The 41-year-old businessman from Mandan won the GOP’s endorsement for secretary of state in April over incumbent Al Jaeger.
