Braves score 6 runs in 9th to defeat, deflate Marlins

-

Atlanta’s Dansby Swanson struck out to begin the ninth inning, so he wanted to do something special with the game on the line after the Braves batted around.

“Yeah, I mean, who doesn’t?” Swanson said. “I think situations like that are what this game is meant to be played for. But obviously we wouldn’t have been in that situation if the whole team didn’t pick each other up that whole inning.”

Swanson’s two-run single capped a six-run ninth, and the host Braves rallied to stun the Miami Marlins 10-9 on Sunday.

Ronald Acuna Jr. drove in two runs in the seventh and another in the ninth as the Braves moved 11 games over .500 for the first time since July 5, 2014. Atlanta has won nine of its past 12.

“I almost expect ’em to do it,” manager Brian Snitker said. “I mean, down six in the bottom of the fifth, I felt good. I really did. I thought that these guys have a lot of time to go to work here and then you get a little bit farther away, but they never stop. It’s a great win for these guys.”

Miami led 6-0 after four innings and 9-4 to begin the ninth. Lewis Brinson’s first career grand slam highlighted a six-run fourth, and Miguel Rojas homered twice and drove in four runs for the Marlins.

“This is a tough one,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly told MLB.com. “You don't really get much tougher than this.” Astros 3, Indians 1: Lance McCullers allowed one hit over seven innings and Brian McCann hit a two-run homer as host Houston pushed Cleveland — the AL Central leader — back under .500.

Cardinals 5, Phillies 1: Jack Flaherty struck out 13 and Tyler O’Neill homered for host St. Louis. Philadelphia’s Odubel Herrera went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, ending his 45-game on-base streak that began last season.

Dodgers 7, Nationals 2: Kiké Hernandez and Yasiel Puig each hit two-run homers as visiting Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep.

Angels 5, Rays 2: Shohei Ohtani struck out nine in 72⁄3 innings and host Los Angeles ended a five-game skid. Ohtani retired 12 straight after yielding rookie Johnny Field’s homer leading off the third, helping the Angels improve to 6-1 when he starts. Tampa Bay’s Sergio Romo, who started and struck out three in one inning Saturday, started again and struck out three and walked two before leaving after 11⁄3 scoreless innings.

Mariners 3, Tigers 2: Mitch Haniger hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning before Jean Segura singled home the winner in the 11th for host Seattle. Detroit’s Francisco Liriano took a no-hitter into the seventh and allowed one hit in eight innings but got no decision when Haniger homered off closer Shane Greene. “I couldn’t have made a worse pitch at a worse time, and I paid for it,” Greene said.

Mets 4, Diamondbacks 1: Amed Rosario hit two home runs and pinch-hitter Asdrubal Cabrera connected for a goahead drive as host New York completed a three-game sweep. Arizona has lost four in a row and 10 of 11, scoring just 22 runs in that span.

Red Sox 5, Orioles 0: J.D. Martinez hit two home runs and Eduardo Rodriguez and three relievers combined on a rare 13-hit shutout for host Boston. “It’s hard to get 13 hits and not score any runs,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. “It’s frustrating.”

Yankees 10, Royals 1: Sonny Gray held host Kansas City to one run and four hits in eight innings and Tyler Austin homered twice as New York won an eighth consecutive series for the first time in 20 years.

Padres 8, Pirates 5: Freddy Galvis drove in the go-ahead run in a four-run ninth inning with visiting San Diego’s second successful squeeze bunt of the game.

White Sox 3, Rangers 0: Reynaldo Lopez limited Texas to two hits and struck out eight in eight innings as host Chicago won three of four in the series.

Cubs 6, Reds 1: Yu Darvish held host Cincinnati to one run and two hits in six innings as visiting Chicago won three of four in the series.

Twins 3, Brewers 1: Logan Morrison’s two-run single snapped a tie in the eighth inning as host Minnesota avoided a three-game sweep.
