John Paplos

John Paplos passed away peacefully at home on the morning of May 18, 2018 at the age of 92. Born in Karyia, Argolidas, Greece to George and Elanie Panagiotop­oulos, the second of eight children. John’s first job when arriving in the United States was as a sheep-herder in Utah. Shortly thereafter, he came to California and made San Francisco his home. He was a member of the Retail Clerks Union and worked at numerous owner-operated neighborho­od grocery stores throughout the City.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Stavroula (Voula) Paplos to whom he was married for 59 years. Voula was his constant traveling companion, dance and life partner. Loving father to Jim Paplos, father-in-law to Christine Cannon-Paplos, and Papou to John Paplos, Catherine Williams (Everett), and Lauren Paplos.

John is also survived by his sisters, Dimitra (Christos) and Panagiota (Dimitri) in Greece; brothers Paul (Elanie), Peter (Evagalia), and Andreas (Pitsa) in Australia; brothers Konstantin­o (Maria) and Vasilios (Nicki) in the Bay Area; his numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, and cousins. John was a jokester and loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Tuesday, May 22, after 3:00 p.m. and are invited to attend the Trisagion Service at 7:00 p.m. at Duggan’s Funeral Service, 3434-17th Street, San Francisco, and the Funeral Service on Wednesday, May 23 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 999 Brotherhoo­d Way, at 10:00 am; Internment will follow at the Greek Orthodox Memorial Park; and reception to follow.
