_1 Drownings: A man and his 5year-old daughter drowned in the San Joaquin River near Mendota, authorities said. The Fresno County Sheriff ’s Office said a dive team was dispatched Saturday after the 30-year-old father and the girl disappeared in the river. The man may have been trying to save his daughter after she fell in, said sheriff ’s Lt. Frances Devins. They were not immediately identified.
_2 Fire threat: Some mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted near a Southern California brushfire. The Orange County Fire Authority said the blaze that began Saturday in Aliso Woods Canyon grew to about 150 acres. Residents were allowed to return to more than 2,000 homes in Aliso Viejo, but residents of some Laguna Beach neighborhoods remained under evacuation orders Sunday. Two minor firefighter injuries were reported. _3 Wildfire: Residents of a northern New Mexico community were told to evacuate their homes late Saturday because or a raging wildfire. State Forestry officials said the order came after the fire doubled in size to about 47 square miles. The fire has destroyed as many as 14 outbuildings at nearby Philmont Scout Ranch. And it previously caused the evacuation of residents of nearly 300 homes in the neighboring town of Cimarron. Approximately 450 firefighters and other personnel are assigned to the fire. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. _4 Plane crash: A prominent home builder was identified Sunday as one of four people on board a small plane that crashed off the coast of East Hampton, N.Y. Police identified the people as builder Bernard Krupinski, 70; Bonnie Krupinski, 70; William Maerov, 22; and Jon Dollard, 47. Two bodies have been recovered, and officials on Sunday resumed their search for the other two before suspending the effort. It was not immediately clear which of the four passengers had been recovered. The Federal Aviation Administration said the Piper went down Saturday about a mile and a half south of East Hampton. Bernard Krupinski’s clients included Martha Stewart and Billy Joel. _5 Officer injured: A San Diego police officer accidentally shot himself in the leg Sunday while pursuing a hit-and-run suspect who pointed a weapon at police and was eventually arrested on the roof of a parking structure, authorities said. Officers fired at the woman but missed after she brandished the weapon at the parking facility in the city’s downtown, police Chief David Nisleit said. The suspect, identified by police as Mona Elease Williams, 58, threw the weapon to the street below before being taken into custody. It was unclear what type of weapon it was, but investigators were looking into whether it was a pellet gun that resembles the real thing, the chief said. Nisleit didn’t have details on the wounded officer’s condition or the circumstances of the accidental shooting. It wasn’t clear how many shots the officers fired at the woman.
