Wacha’s no-hit bid ends on single in 9th

-

St. Louis right-hander Michael Wacha lost a no-hit bid in the ninth inning for the second time in his career, denied when pinch-hitter Colin Moran led off with a single Sunday, but the Cardinals still beat Pittsburgh 5-0 in St. Louis.

“It’s just a slight disappointment because I wanted it,” Wacha said. “I’ve flirted with it a couple of times. It just didn’t happen. Maybe next time.”

In 2013, Wacha was an out away from a no-hitter when Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman got an infield single.

Wacha (7-1) struck out eight and walked two. He retired the first 13 batters.

Moran fouled off three pitches before lining a clean single over second baseman Kolten Wong into right field.

“I was just trying to get a pitch somewhere near the middle of the plate,” Moran said. “And luckily, I got one I could do something with. Obviously, it was cool with the crowd standing on their feet.”

Jordan Hicks replaced Wacha after Moran’s hit and allowed a one-out single by Austin Meadows before shutting down the Pirates.

Twins 7, Indians 5: Eddie Rosario hit his third homer of the game, launching a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning off Cody Allen to lift Minnesota. Rosario became the first Twins player to have two three-homer games. Allen “throws 95, but I stayed through the ball,” Rosario said. “I didn’t know where the ball was going, but I wanted to try to finish the game.”

Braves 4, Nationals 2: Charlie Culberson hit a gameending pinch-hit homer — his second in a week — for Atlanta, which won three of four in its series with Washington. Nationals starter Jeremy Hellickson will have an MRI exam after he left with one out in the first inning because of a strained hamstring.

Mariners 2, Devil Rays 1: Felix Hernandez allowed one run in eight innings as host Seattle completed a threegame sweep. Tampa Bay’s Blake Snell struck out 12 — including the first seven bat- ters he faced to tie an American League record — in six scoreless innings. Diamondbacks 6, Marlins 1: David Peralta homered for the third consecutive game and Matt Koch allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings as Arizona completed a threegame sweep to cap a 5-1 homestand. The Diamondbacks moved 1½ games ahead of second-place Colorado in the NL West by extending Miami’s losing streak to six games.

Dodgers 10, Rockies 7: Max Muncy homered twice as visiting Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep by dealing Colorado its fourth straight loss. The Dodgers, who erased a five-run deficit, scored three runs in the ninth against closer Wade Davis, the final two coming on Yasmani Grandal’s homer.

Red Sox 9, Astros 3: Mitch Moreland and Andrew Benintendi each homered for visiting Boston, which ended Houston starter Charlie Morton’s 10game winning streak. Morton was tagged for six runs and nine hits in 51⁄3 innings. Padres 6, Reds 3: Hunter Renfroe hit a pinch-hit, goahead grand slam in the in the fifth inning for host San Diego. Padres third baseman Christian Villanueva left the game after fouling a ball off his left ankle in the first inning.

White Sox 6, Brewers 1: Daniel Palka and Adam Engel hit back-to-back homers in a three-run sixth inning as host Chicago won two of three in the series. NL Central-leading Milwaukee had won six consecutive series.

Cubs 2, Mets 0: Javier Baez stole home on Steven Matz’s pickoff attempt to first to snap a seventh-inning tie and visiting Chicago completed a four-game sweep. Cubs shortstop Addison Russell left the game with a left middle finger contusion.

Angels 3, Rangers 1: Justin Upton homered and Tyler Skaggs pitched six scoreless innings as host Los Angeles prevailed.

Blue Jays 8, Tigers 4: Justin Smoak homered and had three RBIs to help visiting Toronto end a five-game losing streak.
