Thomas Stuart Malim

-

Thomas Stuart Malim (Tom or Tommy), January 14, 1956 to July 7, 2018, age 62, from complications from a stroke, in Vacaville, California.

Born in Osaka, Japan to Thomas William and Noriko Malim (Hirose). Tom was raised in San Francisco, CA and attended, Sunnyside Elementary, St. Finn Barr’s and Riordan High Schools. He spent many years as a mechanic in the Bay Area and Sacramento Area before he became a proud member of the Sacramento Fire Department (SFD) in 1988. He was promoted to Engineer in 1994 and was still serving in that capacity at the time of his death.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Noriko and an infant son, Steven William. Tom was a loving husband and father. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of two months, Lisa Minczeski, his son Sebastian and daughters Pilar and Bronwyn. He is also survived by his granddaughter Quinn Malim (5 mos., Sebastian Malim and Sherrie Malone), his step-children Lucas (Kelsey) and Olivia Llamas, brother George Malim, Nephew Joseph “Joey” Malim, Niece Mary Margaret “Molly” MalimWeeks, grandnephew Ari Weeks and grandniece Edythe Weeks. Tom was a well-loved and respected member of the Sacramento Fire Department for over 30 years.

He was always a tinkerer, working on cars, motorcycles and home projects. His favorite pastime was riding his motorcycle either to and from work, on daily errands and especially on multi-day and multi-week rides with his brother and friends. He was just introducing Lisa to the joys of multi-day rides.

The past six years have been the happiest in his life, having dated and married Lisa Minczeski, his friend of 30 years. He is deeply missed by his friends and family.

Perhaps his life is best summed up by his stepson Lucas Llamas when he wrote: “Cigars, whiskey, motorcycles, rock n’ roll, damn good cooking and hard work…,” about Tom in a recent post. And as his SFD brothers and sisters know, “he was always willing to share the history of the SFD over a cigar and a cup of fancy pressed coffee, usually on the front ramp of Fire Station 4.”

Tom was a member of Sacramento Firefighters Union Local 522.

Tom’s family sincerely thanks the men and women of the Sacramento Fire Department, Local 522 and the SFD Fire Department Chaplaincy for their amazing support of Tom and his family throughout his illness. A special thank you to Captain Erica Enslin for her unwavering support and presence during the past few weeks.

The family would also like to thank East Lawn Mortuary for their generosity and support.
