NEWS OF THE DAY

From Across the Nation

1 Hiker rescued: A 13-year-old boy from Utah who became separated from his Boy Scout group during a hiking trip in western Wyoming has been found and is in good health. Sheriff ’s Sgt. Travis Bingham said Garrett Hunter was found about 10:15 p.m. Sunday by volunteer searchers. Rough terrain and darkness forced the search group to wait until Monday to take the boy out of the Wind River Range. The scout group had been on a 50-mile, multiday hike in an area about 10 miles from Pinedale when the boy was reported missing Saturday afternoon.

2 Newspaper attack: The man charged with killing five people at the Capital newsroom in Annapolis, Md., pleaded not guilty Monday. Attorneys for Jarrod Ramos entered the plea in electronic court filings. A grand jury has indicted Ramos on 23 counts, including murder. Wes Adams, the Anne Arundel County state’s attorney, said the next step in the case is a status conference next month to discuss a trial date. Police say Ramos used a shotgun June 28 to blast his way into the newsroom. Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith, and Wendi Winters were killed. The Capital newspaper had written about Ramos pleading guilty to harassing a former high school classmate in 2011.

3 Toxic chemical: About two dozen people were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning at an event in Greeley, Colo., after a generator at a taco stand leaked exhaust into a building. Police Lt. Aaron Carmichael said people who suffered symptoms were unable to walk, some had seizures and some lost consciousness. Common carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms include headaches, dizziness, weakness and confusion. The Greeley Fire Department determined the people had carbon monoxide poisoning and all were treated at a hospital Saturday night. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends against using generators within 20 feet of any building windows, doors or vents.

4 Three killed: Police say a shooting in New Orleans over the weekend that killed three people and wounded seven others appears gang-related, and they need help from the public to identify the gunmen who did it. The department also says the intended target Saturday night appears to have been a male victim who was shot repeatedly. Police Chief Michael Harrison said two hooded suspects walked up to a crowd firing a pistol and a long gun, then stood over one man and shot multiple times into his body before fleeing on foot. 5 Campaign 2018: A congressional candidate in Virginia says her opponent is unfit for office because he is a “devotee of Bigfoot erotica.” Democrat Leslie Cockburn accuses Republican Denver Riggleman of fetishizing the mythical ape-like giant. Cockburn made the accusations on Twitter and posted pictures from Riggleman’s Instagram account showing nude drawings of Bigfoot. Riggleman says the drawings were meant as satire, mock cover art for a book he wrote.
