RAIDERS BEAT Corner Conley’s hip strain could take 2 weeks to heal

Projected starting cornerback Gareon Conley probably will miss a significant stretch of training camp with a hip strain, Raiders head coach Jon

Gruden confirmed Monday. Conley suffered the injury in the first camp practice Friday. He has not practiced for the past three days and was seen briefly Monday on a side field doing resistance-band work with a trainer. Though Gruden said he did not have a time frame for Conley, he said two weeks “would be a fair assessment.”

In that scenario, Conley could miss the Aug. 10 preseason opener against Detroit and preceding joint practices with the Lions.

Conley, the Raiders’ firstround pick in 2017, missed all of training camp and preseason last year with a shin injury that eventually cut his rookie season short after two games. He declared himself healthy this spring but also missed part of a June minicamp with a groin issue.

Gruden was asked if Conley’s latest injury is cause for concern.

“I don’t know if concerned is the word,” Gruden said. “I think disappointed is the word.

“He comes out to start training camp, he’s in superb shape, he makes a great play and he gets a setback. Hopefully, he comes back sooner than later. But disappointed is the big word, I think. His heart is broken. He’s put a lot into this. And he knows he’s got to stay healthy and get out there for us, because we need him.” In Conley’s absence, Daryl

Worley has been taking firstteam reps at cornerback with

Rashaan Melvin. The Raiders signed Worley, 23, in April, shortly after he was released by the Eagles following an arrest for charges including driving under the influence. Worley started 14 games last season for Carolina.

“He’s moving up on our depth chart,” Gruden said of Worley. “He’s a savvy guy. I think he’s put what happened to him behind. I think he’s focused now.” Also absent: The Raiders had three players start camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list: Donald Penn, Eddie Vanderdoes and P.J. Hall. On Monday, three other players had joined them working off to the side: running backs Jalen Richard and Chris Warren III, and offensive lineman Cameron Hunt.

Gruden said he hopes Richard, who has a mild calf strain, and Warren, an undrafted rookie, can practice Wednesday. The Raiders also signed undrafted free agent running back James Butler on Monday.

Vanderdoes (ACL recovery) and Hall (pectoral strain) also could return in the next couple of days, Gruden said. The Raiders are off Tuesday.

Meanwhile, offensive lineman Vadal Alexander, who did not report for camp, might not be on the roster much longer. Gruden did not make that official but said: “I believe we’re going to move on.”

Alexander, a seventh-round pick in 2016, played in 24 games with nine starts over the past two seasons. He is suspended for the first four games of this season for violating the NFL’s performanceenhancing drug policy.
