Tommy John for Gossett

- By John Shea John Shea is The San Francisco Chronicle’s national baseball writer.

The elbow epidemic continues. Another A’s pitcher will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Daniel Gossett, a secondround pick in 2014 who made 23 starts for the A’s the past two seasons, is the latest in the organization who’ll have his ulnar-collateral ligament repaired.

Gossett consulted with Dr. Keith Meister in Texas, and Meister recommended the surgery, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

“Obviously, it’s unfortunate,” manager Bob Melvin said. “These are injuries that keep you out for a while. You always talk about depth in the rotation and trying to create as much depth as you can. To have this many guys go down certainly hurts us, but it gives someone else an opportunity.”

Jharel Cotton, projected for the rotation, had Tommy John surgery in March. A.J. Puk, the sixth overall pick in 2016, had it in April.

And Opening Day starter Kendall Graveman had it Monday.

Gossett, 25, is expected to miss at least 12 months and could sit out all of next season.

He was 4-0 with a 1.63 ERA in seven games (five starts) for Triple-A Nashville and most recently pitched for the A’s on June 3. Two days later, he was placed on the disabled list with an elbow flexor strain.

In five starts for the A’s, he was 0-3 with a 5.18 ERA.

“I know he’s a hard-working kid. He’s come a long way,” Melvin said. “We saw some really good games from him this year, and I believe he’ll rehab this thing and be back strong as ever, but unfortunately, it’s just going to take a while.” Luzardo moves up: Continuing his accelerated rise through the farm system, 20year-old Jesus Luzardo was promoted to Triple-A Nashville.

The lefty opened the season with Class A Stockton and was 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA in three starts before advancing to Double-A Midland, with which he was 7-3 with a 2.29 ERA in 16 starts.

“He’s got about five starts left,” general manager David Forst said. “He’s pitched great at Double-A and will have the challenge of Triple-A the last month of the season.”

Luzardo, who had Tommy John surgery as a high schooler in March 2016, has an innings limit of 125. He’s at 931⁄3.

A big-league promotion this year is unlikely, Forst said.

“I don’t think it’s the best thing for him or for the team right now,” Forst said. “That might change on Sept. 1.”
