Mariners prevail, keep pace with A’s

Seattle’s Mitch Haniger hit his 21st homer, Mike Zunino added a solo shot and the visiting Mariners beat the Arizona Diamondbac­ks 6-3 on Friday night.

Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth for his majors-leading 49th save, helping Seattle remain four games behind the A’s for the American League’s second wild card. Diaz set a club record for saves in a season, passing Fernando Rodney’s 48 in 2014.

Haniger, an All-Star who made his majorleagu­e debut with the Diamondbac­ks in 2016 before being traded to Seattle, added two singles and scored twice.

Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez turned in his longest outing of the season, allowing one earned run and six hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Ramirez dropped his ERA from 5.49 to 4.56.

Astros 9, Angels 3: Jose Altuve hit his first home run since July 8 and Marwin Gonzalez hit a grand slam as visiting Houston won its third in a row to maintain a 1½game lead over the secondplac­e A’s in the AL West.

Cardinals 7, Rockies 5: Pitcher Miles Mikolas and Tyler O’Neill each homered to help visiting St. Louis win its fourth in a row. After the Cardinals built a 7-0 lead, Colorado scored five runs in the fifth. The Rockies stranded seven runners the rest of the way.

Dodgers 11, Padres 1: Rich Hill allowed two hits over six innings and Chris Taylor, Justin Turner and Max Muncy homered to help host Los Angeles snap a three-game skid. Hill retired his first 12 batters, seven of them on strikeouts, before Hunter Renfroe doubled leading off the fifth.

Brewers 7, Pirates 6: Orlando Arcia singled home pitcher Jordan Lyles to cap a two-out, three-run rally in the 15th for host Milwaukee. Pittsburgh had taken the lead with two runs in the top of the inning.

Blue Jays 4, Phillies 2: Kendrys Morales homered for the fifth straight game and former A’s prospect Billy McKinney hit a two-run shot as host Toronto won its fourth straight. Philadelph­ia has lost five of its past six.

Cubs 3, Reds 2: David Bote hit a game-ending homer in the 10th inning as Chicago won its third in a row. Bote got behind 0-2 before driving Raisel Iglesias’ next pitch deep to left field with one out.

Yankees 7, Orioles 5: Luke Voit connected in the 10th inning for his second home run of the game as visiting New York beat Baltimore.

Rays 10, Red Sox 3: Willy Adames homered and Michael Perez drove in four runs as host Tampa Bay won its sixth in a row. Perez’s four RBIs matched his total in his first 20 games.

Marlins 1, Braves 0: Dan Straily pitched six strong innings and combined with three relievers on a three-hitter for host Miami, which had lost nine in a row against Atlanta.

Mets 3, Nationals 0: Jay Bruce, activated from the disabled list before the game, hit a two-run homer and Jason Vargas pitched six stellar innings for host New York.

Royals 5, Indians 4: Ryan O’Hearn and Hunter Dozier hit back-to-back home runs leading off the ninth inning to rally host Kansas City. Yonder Alonso hit two homers for Cleveland.

White Sox 6, Tigers 3: Yoan Moncada and Tim Anderson had two-run doubles in a six-run eighth for visiting Chicago.
