Japan women upend Spain to win Under-20 World Cup

Japan defeated Spain 3-1 in the final to win the Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Vannes, France, for the first time.

Hinata Miyazawa, Saori Takarada and Fuka Nagano put their side in a commanding position before Candela Andujar scored a consolatio­n goal for Spain in the 71st minute.

Spain, which beat Japan 1-0 in the group stages on Aug. 9, was without suspended Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati, sent off in a semifinal win over host France.

Earlier Friday, France lost 4-2 on penalties to England in the third-place decider after the game finished 1-1 following extra time.

Stanford launched 24 shots, but the NCAA’s top-ranked men’s soccer team had to settle for a 0-0 tie with San Jose State in the season opener for both teams at Stanford’s Cagan Stadium.

Alex Clewis made a career-high 11 saves for the Spartans, who had lost five in a row to Stanford.

Soccer’s governing body banned the head of Palestinia­n soccer from attending matches for a year for inciting hatred and violence toward Lionel Messi as part of a campaign to stop Argentina’s national team from playing in Israel.

The FIFA disciplina­ry case against Palestinia­n soccer federation head Jibril Rajoub centered on statements he made to the media before Argentina abruptly abandoned the trip to Jerusalem for a game against Israel in June.

Rajoub “incited hatred and violence” by calling on “football fans to target the Argentinia­n Football Associatio­n and burn jerseys and pictures of Lionel Messi,” FIFA said.

France’s World Cup-winning captain Hugo Lloris was charged with drunken driving in London, and he apologized for setting a bad example with “unacceptab­le” behavior. The Tottenham goalkeeper is due to appear at Westminste­r Magistrate­s’ Court on Sept. 11.

Major League Soccer: Josef Martinez broke the MLS season record with his 28th goal, giving host Atlanta United the lead in the 74th minute in a 2-1 victory over Orlando City . ... Carlos Vela scored on a penalty kick in the 51st minute as visiting Los Angeles FC rallied for a 1-1 tie against the LA Galaxy.

Motor sports: NASCAR is changing rules for Xfinity Series and trucks races next season, saying it will strengthen competitio­n and more clearly define each series.

In the Xfinity Series, the maximum starting field will be reduced by two cars to 38. NASCAR says it will reallocate the purse money previously awarded to 39th- and 40thplace finishers to the rest of the field.

Another change involves awarding points in the owner championsh­ip race for the Xfinity and trucks series. Car owners will earn points in the championsh­ip race only if the driver is an Xfinity or trucks series regular.

Kimi Raikkonen posted the fastest time in second practice for the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorcha­mps.

Raikkonen was 0.168 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton and nearly a half second clear of the British driver’s teammate, Valtteri Bottas.
