QBs, cover-ups and a little Brylcreem

- SCOTT OSTLER

Sittin’ on the schlock of the bay ...

The NFL’s parade of mediocre-and-worse quarterbacks is in full swing, and Colin Kaepernick’s phone still ain’t ringin’. Running quarterbacks are so 2010, the experts say. Yet Raiders backup EJ Manuel ran last game. And fumbled.

I still hear radio-show folks recycle old, debunked “reports” that Kaepernick demanded to be a starter or demanded an outrageous salary. This is flatearth stuff. Pure fiction. But if it serves the narrative ...

By the way, NFL owners, in your desperation to appease the president, have players wave sparklers during the national anthem. That won’t satisfy him, he’ll find some other reason to rip the league, but you’ll feel temporarily righteous.

Is Jimmy Garoppolo throwing knuckleballs? His receivers dropped five passes against the Colts, and defenders dropped two would-be interceptions. Even for a practice game, that’s a lot of droppage.

The experts rave about Garoppolo’s touch, so what’s up? Is Jimmy G getting Brylcreem on the ball?

The Buster Posey situation threatens to turn into a soap opera. Posey indicates he plans to come back after surgery as a catcher. Will his repaired hip allow that? What if Joey Bart develops in a hurry? If Posey can’t get his power swing back, can the Giants afford to trot out a slap-hitting catcher, or first baseman?

With all due dis’respect to the IOC, FIFA, NFL, U.S. Gymnastics and other organizations, nobody bulldozes dirt under the rug like college football.

Ohio State’s Urban Meyer would have violated all standards of decency, if standards of decency still existed.

“There was no intent to mislead,” Meyer said. I think the word he was looking for was “lead.”

On Twitter, FunnyMaine. com notes, “The Cover-Up Classic, Sept. 29—Ohio StatePenn State.”

As promised on Twitter, I am seeking info on the weather study the A’s conducted on the Howard Terminal site. Is it Candlestick East, as one source reported? I am digging. Scott Ostler is a San Francisco Chronicle columnist. Email: sostler@sfchronicle.com Twitter: @scottostler
