Angels keep Rockies from tie for 1st place

-

The Angels blew a two-run lead in the top of the eighth inning before rallying with five runs in the bottom half to beat Colorado 10-7 in Anaheim on Monday night.

After DJ LeMahieu’s grand slam gave Colorado a 7-5 lead in the eighth, the Angels ground out their big inning a bit at a time. After loading the bases with no outs on two walks and a single off Adam Ottavino, Andrelton Simmons hit a sacrifice fly to score Mike Trout to make it 7-6. Francisco Arcia struck out and Kaleb Cowart walked to load the bases again.

Seung-Hwan Oh relieved Ottavino and gave up the lead on a two-run single by Eric Young Jr. After a walk to Kole Calhoun, Trevor Story’s throwing error on David Fletcher’s grounder allowed the Angels two insurance runs.

Noe Ramirez closed out the victory with his first career save.

Shohei Ohtani hit a three-run homer for the Angels, and Trout added a solo shot, a two-run single and two walks.

For Colorado, which failed to tie Arizona for the NL West lead, LeMahieu and Carlos Gonzalez each had three hits. Orioles 7, Blue Jays 0: Kendrys Morales had his home run streak snapped at seven games by host Baltimore, which ended an eight-game skid. Striving to tie the majorleague record of homering in eight straight games, he went 0-for-3 with a walk and did not hit the ball out of the infield. Cubs 7, Mets 4: Jon Lester pitched six innings, drove in two runs with a single off Noah Syndergaard and made two nice plays to help host Chicago to its sixth straight win. Anthony Rizzo homered as the NL-leading Cubs moved a season-high 24 games over .500. Nationals 5, Phillies 3: Stephen Strasburg threw six effective innings, Matt Wieters hit a solo homer and visiting Washington defeated Philadelphia. The Phillies fell 3½ games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East after losing the opener for the seventh straight series. White Carlos Rodon Sox 6, pitched Yankees two-hit 2: ball over seven innings, Yoan Moncada doubled in two runs and surging Chicago beat host New York for its fourth straight win. Rodon (6-3) allowed a two-run homer to Gleyber Torres but was strong otherwise, and Chicago’s bullpen closed out a three-hitter.
