Giants waive former Cal QB Webb
Former Cal quarterback Davis Webb, a third-round pick of the New York Giants in 2017, was released Sunday.
Webb, who threw for 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2016, his one season in Berkeley, had an inconsistent performance in three preseason games but had been included on the roster when cuts to the NFL roster maximum of 53 were made Saturday.
Alex Tanney, who has appeared in one NFL game since joining the league in 2012, and rookie Kyle Lauletta will serve as Giants quarterback Eli Manning’s backups.
Among several roster moves, the Giants also signed defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. and defensive back Antonio Hamilton, both of whom were cut by the Raiders this weekend. Edwards, Oakland’s secondround pick in 2015, made 24 starts for the Raiders.
Lynch waived: The Broncos waived QB Paxton Lynch, the team’s 2016 first-round pick, and claimed former Stanford QB Kevin Hogan, who had been waived by Washington.
Lynch, the third quarterback drafted in 2016 — after Jared Goff and Carson Wentz — started two games in each of his first two seasons, posting a 1-3 record. He was unable to unseat Trevor Siemian or Brock Osweiler in those two seasons in Denver, and he was vying for a backup role with the team this season after quarterback Case Keenum signed a two-year, $36 million deal in March.
Denver’s roster also includes quarterback Chad Kelly, a 2017 seventh-round pick.
Wentz update: Philadelphia’s Wentz hasn’t been medically cleared for contact, but coach Doug Pederson said he won’t rule out the quarterback, returning from surgery on two two torn ligaments in his left knee, for the season opener against Atlanta on Thursday night.
“We’ve got a lot of days left,” Pederson said.
Nick Foles, the presumptive starter for the Eagles on Thursday, was the Super Bowl MVP in the Eagles’ 41-33 win over New England.
Gates returns: Four months after the Chargers bade a public goodbye to Antonio Gates, the tight end agreed to a oneyear deal with the team.
The eight-time Pro Bowler is the Chargers’ career leader in receptions (927), yards receiving (11,508) and touchdown catches. He set the NFL record for TD receptions by a tight end in September with No. 112.
Gates, 38, could see a significant role given that Hunter Henry — the Chargers’ starting tight end last season — tore a knee ligament in May and might not play this season.
General manager Tom Telesco wouldn’t say whether he expects Gates to play Sunday.
Briefly: The Panthers placed Matt Kalil on injured reserve with a knee injury, meaning the team’s starting left tackle will miss at least eight games . ... The Dolphins opted to keep four quarterbacks, with San Jose State alum David Fales, Osweiler and rookie Luke Falk — claimed on waivers from the Titans — as backups to Ryan Tannehill . ... The Chiefs released former Raiders quarterback Matt McGloin . ... The Cardinals cut former Raiders wide receiver Brice Butler . ...
