Anderson making strides

- By Susan Slusser Susan Slusser is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

Brett Anderson, out with nerve irritation in his left arm, might be throwing off a mound soon and could be an option for the pitching-strapped A’s later in the month.

Manager Bob Melvin said Anderson, who was placed on the disabled list Tuesday, threw a flat-ground session Sunday and it went well.

Another of Oakland’s many injured starters, Andrew

Triggs (nerve irritation), is likely to go on a rehab assignment at Class A Stockton this week after two innings of work in a simulated game Saturday. There is a chance he could work in the bullpen before the end of the season.

The team is not listing a starter for Tuesday, so it could use the “bullpenning” method attempted without success Saturday. It’s Frankie Montas’ day to start, but a reliever could start the game, as Liam Hendriks did Saturday, and Montas could enter the game later.

“We’ll continue to evaluate that,” Melvin said, adding of Oakland’s 8-7 loss Saturday, “It didn’t go great for us yesterday, but we’re trying to be as creative as we can.”

Matchups could play into the decision, along with which relievers are available, although with a 14-man bullpen, Oakland has any number of options. “A lot of balls in the air as far as trying to figure that one out,” Melvin said.

The team used nine relievers Saturday. Asked about new lefty Dean Kiekhefer, Melvin joked, “I think he and I were the only two guys who didn’t pitch last night.”

Game for a cause: Monday is the A’s ALS Awareness Day, and the team will present a check for $150,000 to the ALS Therapy Development Institute before the game against the Yankees — who gave $10,000 to ALS TDI in honor of Gretchen Piscotty on Mothers’ Day, when the two teams played in New York.

Piscotty, the mother of outfielder Stephen Piscotty, died May 6 after battling ALS. (More on the family’s work on ALS on page A1.)

Fans can purchase a special event ticket for ALS Awareness Day at athletics.com/als; $5 from each will benefit ALS TDI. A percentage of proceeds from

Stephen Piscotty jersey and T-shirt sales this season will go to ALS TDI. Fans may contribute directly at gofundme.com/piscottyals.

Briefly: The A’s have five players (Khris Davis, Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, Jed Lowrie and Piscotty) with 20 or more homers, tying the franchise record, also matched last season . ... Chad Pinder had three hits.
