March 24, 1932 – August 23, 2018

Our beloved mother, May Tang Chu, passed peacefully at home on August 23, 2018. She was born and raised in Hong Kong and was the third of four children. She graduated from Maryknoll Catholic School in Kowloon, which was well known for its distinguished academia. She loved to travel and met our father, Kirby Chu, during one of her trips to the United States. Our parents fell in love and were married in Washington DC. Our father’s work for the U.S. State Department moved them all over the world, including Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines. Our parents raised three children during these years and eventually relocated back to the U.S., to Annandale, Virginia. After our father retired, our family moved from Virginia to San Francisco, California. Our parents had always wanted to start a business and since our mother was a fabulous cook, they opened Mekong Restaurant in Daly City, specializing in Szechuan and Hunan cuisine. They later changed the name to May Kong Restaurant and were in the restaurant business for over 20 years before retiring again. After the passing of our father, our mother remained vibrant and active. She traveled extensively, took line dancing classes, sung Chinese Opera, played mahjong with friends, enjoyed afternoon tea and volunteered in the local community with CCWA (Chinese Consolidated Women’s Association). She was also very physically active, going to the gym and swimming almost daily.

Our mother was preceded in death by our brother, David P Chu, and our father, Kirby K.P. Chu. She is survived by family members all over the world and her loving daughters: Sylvia Chu (Brendan), Rolanda Chu (Zac) and granddaughter, Himalaya Chu Holtzman.

Memorial Service will be at 1pm on Sunday, September 9, 2018, CHAPEL OF THE HIGHLANDS, 194 Millwood Dr, Millbrae, followed by interment at Hoy Sun Memorial Cemetery, 2101 Hillside Blvd, Colma. A memorial dinner will be held at 4pm at Hong Kong Flower Lounge, 51 Millbrae Ave, Millbrae.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made towards her granddaughter’s educational fund via Sylvia Chu, 1819 Trousdale Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010.
